A
genuine artistic mission involves engaging more deeply with a growing number of
people and the fact that last season more people came to more concerts than ever
before indicates that we are heading in the right direction: we broke every
record for attendance with 94% of sales being subscription tickets. I am now
convinced that aiming to share music as widely as possible and asking those who
support this aim to support through voluntary donation is the key to artistic
development everywhere.
For 2009/10 we have only a half season but that is because of the closure of the hall in January for renovation. I fervently hope that when it reopens we shall be able to make even faster progress; that we shall be able to draw more people than ever to this wonderful building and contribute to building a really dynamic and vibrant musical life in Watford.
In the meantime I look forward to welcoming you to another set of great programmes. As well as orchestral concerts including some of our favourite guest artists we have a celebrity recital with Thomas Trotter playing the marvellous organ: I visited the hall one day when it was being serviced and discovered what an exciting combination this instrument and hall provide. We have also added a series of pre-concert talks starting one hour before each concert which I hope you will find interesting and informative. I look forward to seeing you and another great season of concerts.
